Coban
--- Coban's
Huipil' s often are hand-embroidered with rows of small design
geometric and floral elements in a variety of colors around the neck and
arm openings. The traditional cloth was hand-woven open woven
material sometime referred to as "gauze-like". Some are
still made of this cloth and may or may not be embroidered. Most Coban
huipils today are hand-embroidered on commercial cotton cloth of various
quality and some on a fine shiny or patterned polyester cloth. Women from
many parts of Guatemala wear a "Coban-like" huipil on hotter
days. The huipil's cloth is cooler than the heavy woven materials of other
areas of the Highland of Guatemala. Coban's huipils neck openings
are also larger than many other huipils.

--Beautiful hand embroidered flower
designs on this "Coban style" huipil. The fine hand work is done on two
layers of pink coral commercial cloth - one lace like synthetic material and
the other a plain base cloth that often extends beyond the "lace" cloth so
it can be easily tucked in a skirt. This type of huipil that is
being found in many parts of Guatemala when Mayan woman still honor and love
the tradition of the huipil, but no longer have the skills or time to weave
and may prefer a huipil that is cooler on a hot day. The embroidery on this

The is base cloth extends about 2 -3 inches below the lace and
has a selvage edge. Excellent condition used huipil. It just
fits over my head.

and a few light spotting. The button-hole finishing around the neck is
somewhat worn, but if redone would make this an exceptional huipil to wear. It
just fits over my
head.

ducks and other geometric designs.
 The embroidery on this huipil is finely done.

does not hang below the "lace" cloth. 3-panels of base cloth
were woven on a back-strap loom and have selvage edges. It fits over my head.
Its the type of huipil I love to wear on a hot day. Very good used huipil
with a few loose threads and very light spots.
