Coban Guatemala (Kekchi) Mayan Huipils and Textiles 

Coban --- Coban's  Huipil' s often are hand-embroidered with rows of small design geometric and floral elements in a variety of colors around the neck and arm openings.   The traditional cloth was hand-woven open woven material sometime referred to as "gauze-like".  Some are still made of this cloth and may or may not be embroidered. Most Coban huipils today are hand-embroidered on commercial cotton cloth of various quality and some on a fine shiny or patterned polyester cloth. Women from many parts of Guatemala wear a "Coban-like" huipil on hotter days. The fine hand work is done on commercial cloth - the commercial cloth has eyelets that create a rich appearance.  This type of  huipil that is being found in many parts of Guatemala when Mayan woman still honor and love the tradition of the huipil, but no longer have the skills or time to weave and may prefer a huipil that is cooler on a hot day. The button-hole finishing around the neck is somewhat worn, but if redone would make this an exceptional huipil to wear.  It just fits over my head.

It fits over my head. Its the type of huipil I love to wear on a hot day. Very good used huipil with a few loose threads and very light spots.

	Fitting ---  Huipils were traditionally made on a loom. Thus they are made of rectangular pieces and are not intended to be a fitted garment.  The width of the garment should be considerably larger (at least 25 to 33%) than the shoulders of the wearer.  Think about room to grow too! Mayan women often put tucks in a huipil's shoulder then remove them as a child grows. In Coban wear the Huipil loose, hanging over their full skirts.  In other parts of the country some Mayan women do tuck them in.  The necks on these Huipils are generally larger than other Huipils.
