| In the future I will be be
more systematic at asking the artist I bought the Santo from the name of the
saint and writing the name down. I have found the two books below useful
references on Guatemalan Santos and Folk Saints.
1- "The Santos of
Guatemala, Volume I, English Edition", Tony Pasinski. Didacsa,
Centro Cientifico Culture, 1997 (out of print) --- This is the best resource
I have found to help identify Guatemala Saints based on dress, attributes
and objects associated with the Saint. As Pasinski notes "We will not be
able to determine the name of every saint we see. Guatemalan artists, our
untrained eye, or lack of knowledge, and time itself have made the job of
identification of many saints difficult".
2 - "Guatemala's Folk Saints: Maximon/San
Simon, Rey Pascual, Judas, Lucifer and others." Jim Pieper, 2002,
Distributed by the University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque. |
