Tecpan / Quezaltenango (Xela) Woman's Huipil -  This is an unusual 4 panel huipil!!!   The base weave of the huipil is a typical Tecpan design, but the embroidery including the colorful randas that holds the panels together and the beautiful machine embroidered neckline is of Quezaltenango (Xela) style.  It was probably made by a woman whose family ties come from both municipalities.  The base huipil was tightly hand-woven on a back-strap loom of cotton.  The embroidery is probably a combination of cotton and synthetics.  One side of the huipil panels are nicely selvage finished, the other is neatly hemmed. The 4 panels allow the huipil to meet both the constraints of the 2-panel Tecpan huipil and the design of the 3-panel Xela huipil.  The hupil is in generally very good used condition with one very light stain in white base of one of the the outer panels. This is an interesting piece for a collector of unusual huipils.

Tecpan Guatemala Huipil (H_TE_014)
Tecpan Woman's Huipil -  A newer style of Tecpan huipil, that mimics some of design elements of San Antonio Aguas Caliente, namely the band of birds on the shoulder and across the front of the huipil.  The two-panels  are made on a backstrap loom of synthetic threads.  The ends of the panels are loosely selvage finished. The side are open so the huipil can be worn as a poncho or easily stitched closed.  The huipil is in generally good used condition with some loose threads and light spotting. A fun colorful huipil with birds.

Fitting Tips ---  Huipils were traditionally made on a loom. Thus they are made of rectangular pieces and are not intended to be a fitted garment.  The width of the garment should be considerably larger (at least 25 to 33%) than the shoulders of the wearer so that the huipils covers part of the upper arm.  Think about room to grow too! Mayan women often put tucks in a huipil's shoulder then remove them as a child grows.

Neck and head hole openings on Huipils are often small.  Note that we can not guarantee that the neck size of a Huipil fits you and your child.  If you want to wear some huipils you may have to open the neck opening and lightly stitch it. This is especially true of Huipils that have been woven on a back-strap loom.    Please check your neck and head measurements carefully!!!  The arm holes can also be small, but can usually be easily opened.
