Panels are open.

Used but well loved and cared for huipil. The fine embroidery shows many of the birds of the area surrounded by flowers.  Equal work is found in the hand brocaded traditional bird figures found in the base cloth. Two panel back-strapped loomed cloth one side with finished selvages the other hemmed.  Open sides so can be worn as a poncho or can easily be stitched closed.  It fits over my 22" circumference head - very comfortably! In very good used condition.

One side selvage finished other hemmed.  This is a used huipil, but the person who wore it was proud of it and took good care of it.  Very good used condition.  Just fits over my 22" circumference head.

H_SA_044 Woman's Huipil  Width: 29" Length:  28" Neck : 7" wide,  2" deep Price:  $200 sold		Santiago Atitlan -  This Santiago Atitlan hupil is beautifully embroidered with many birds and flowers.  The work is done on two hand-embroidered panels.  They have salvage ends on two sides and the other two sides are hemmed.  The huipil shows only light wear. by Dolores whose huipil it was. She is shown below with her Grandchildren.  The used huipils condition is excellent with very few loose thread and a very nicely finished neckline.

H_SA_055 Woman's Huipil  Width: 31" Length:  29" Neck : 8" wide,  2" deep Price:  $175 sold		Santiago Atitlan -  Over 450 embroidered birds on this exceptionally fine and detailed huipil.   Please look at the closeups. Nice flowers around the neck which easily fits over my 22" head (at widest point).  The base material is a light blue and is hand-woven on a backstrap loom.  Two of the panels are selvage finished. Two are reinforced fringe finished. The sides are open so could be used as a poncho or easily stitched closed.  Overall a beautiful used huipil in very good to excellent condition, with a few loose threads and light wear, but nothing significant.

Primary material is cotton with some synthetic metallic threads to give the shine that is favored in Santiago Atitlan these days.

	Santiago Atitlan - Green foot-loomed jaspe (ikat) corte material.  In good used condition.   Primary material is cotton. This is a color that is increasing being favored by young Santiago Atitlan women who wear the skirt with a light purple huipil from Santiago Atitlan.

	Fitting Tips ---  Huipils were traditionally made on a loom. Thus they are made of rectangular pieces and are not intended to be a fitted garment.  The width of the garment should be considerably larger (at least 25 to 33%) than the shoulders of the wearer.  Think about room to grow too! Mayan women often put tucks in a huipil's shoulder then remove them as a child grows.  Neck and head hole openings on Huipils are often small.  Note that we can not guarantee that the neck size of a Huipil fits you and your child.  If you want to wear some huipils you may have to open the neck opening and lightly stitch it. This is especially true of Huipils that have been woven on a back-strap loom.    Please check your neck and head measurements carefully!!!                            last  updated June 3, 2005
