H_SA_055 Woman's Huipil  Width: 31" Length:  29" Neck : 8" wide,  2" deep Price:  $175 sold		Santiago Atitlan -  Over 450 embroidered birds on this exceptionally fine and detailed huipil.   Please look at the closeups. Nice flowers around the neck which easily fits over my 22" head (at widest point).  The base material is a light blue and is hand-woven on a backstrap loom.  Two of the panels are selvage finished. Two are reinforced fringe finished. The sides are open so could be used as a poncho or easily stitched closed.  Overall a beautiful used huipil in very good to excellent condition, with a few loose threads and light wear, but nothing significant.

She is shown below with her Grandchildren.  The used huipils condition is excellent with very few loose thread and a very nicely finished neckline.

The work is done on two hand-woven panels of a light lavender blue.  They have salvage ends on two sides and the other two sides are hemmed. The sides are open so could be used as a poncho or easily stitched closed. The head hole just fits over my 22" head (at widest point). The huipil shows light wear by Dolores whose huipil it was. She is shown below with her Grandchildren.  The used huipils condition is very good with very few loose threads and light wear.

Primary material is cotton with some synthetic metallic threads to give the shine that is favored in Santiago Atitlan these days.

	Santiago Atitlan - Green foot-loomed jaspe (ikat) corte material.  In good used condition.   Primary material is cotton. This is a color that is increasing being favored by young Santiago Atitlan women who wear the skirt with a light purple huipil from Santiago Atitlan.

	Santiago Atitlan - Rich red 2-panel foot-loomed jaspe (ikat)  tube skirt (corte).  In excellent, probably newly woven condition.  One panel is 32" wide, the other is 10" and has been added to lengthen the skirt. Primary material is cotton with some synthetic metallic threads to give the shine that is favored in Santiago Atitlan these days.  Dimensions of the skirt's fabric is 42" by 132".

	Fitting Tips ---  Huipils were traditionally made on a loom. Thus they are made of rectangular pieces and are not intended to be a fitted garment.  The width of the garment should be considerably larger (at least 25 to 33%) than the shoulders of the wearer.  Think about room to grow too! Mayan women often put tucks in a huipil's shoulder then remove them as a child grows.  Neck and head hole openings on Huipils are often small.  Note that we can not guarantee that the neck size of a Huipil fits you and your child.  If you want to wear some huipils you may have to open the neck opening and lightly stitch it. This is especially true of Huipils that have been woven on a back-strap loom.    Please check your neck and head measurements carefully!!!                            last  updated June 3, 2005
