San Raimundo (Raymundo) Guatemala (Cakchiquel/Kaqchikel) Mayan Huipils & Textiles

San Raimundo is a neighboring Cakchiquel-speaking municipality to San Juan Sacatepequez.  Both towns like bright colors with strong designs and I have seen similar huipils attributed to both. The stripes on the San Raimundo usually are narrower with red and orange stripes making a stronger statement than in San Juan huipils. Other stripe colors are often mauve, yellow-gold and sometimes a rich brown, The huipil often has designs of feathered serpents and sometimes little birds ("pajarito") and corn stalks brocaded into its woven fabric. Also attributed to San Raimundo are solid colored huipils with similar brocading. They seem to be less common and may actually come from a neighboring small town (aldea). All huipils are hand-woven on a back-strap loom.

The Huipils we have for sale are pictured below, generally going from smaller sizes to larger sizes.  They are used, daily use huipils unless otherwise indicated.

San Raimundo? or Cruz Blanca (an aldea - rural community of San Juan Sacatepequez.   Back-strap loomed child's huipil that is 19" wide  by 18.5"long. It is actually a single panel of cotton that was neatly woven on a back-strap loom with a center vertical stripe to look like a traditional two-panel huipil. Finely brocaded decoration in cotton thread of small birds.  Generally good lightly used condition, but with a couple wear-spots around head-hole.

San Raimundo --- Finely woven, with little birds (pararitos) in the brocade.  Click on the pictures to get a better sense of the nicely finished neck and shoulders and beautiful colorful randa that holds the two panels together. Its my hunch that this is an older piece. Panels ends are selvage finished. There are a few light spots and loose threads -especially in some of the yellow brocade. Otherwise in good used condition.

Fitting Tips ---  Huipils were traditionally made on a loom. Thus they are made of rectangular pieces and are not intended to be a fitted garment.  The width of the garment should be considerably larger (at least 25 to 33%) than the shoulders of the wearer.  Think about room to grow too! Mayan women often put tucks in a huipil's shoulder then remove them as a child grows.

Neck and head hole openings on Huipils are often small.  Note that we can not guarantee that the neck size of a Huipil fits you and your child.  If you want to wear some huipils you may have to open the neck opening and lightly stitch it. This is especially true of Huipils that have been woven on a back-strap loom.    Please check your neck and head measurements carefully!!!

Our Guarantee: We want you to be completely satisfied with our products.   If you are not, notify us within 30 days and return the item.  Depending on your choice we will refund your money (minus original cost of shipping) or give you a credit on another item.
