Chichicastenango - Fun traditional designs in this girl's used huipil
in fair+ condition (quite good for a white child's huipil). Some
graying and stains on white background and openness around the selvage of
the hand-woven panels. I believe the white background is cotton with a
variety of threads types in the brocaded design. A good example of a Chichi
child's huipil that is wearable, but not perfect
Chichicastenango - Fun bright color, with variation in the
color dye of the threads used in the panels when they were woven.
Sun design around the neck done in velvet rather than usual embroidered
style. My guess is that this huipil is a least 10 year older than many of
the other Chichi huipils I have (probably from 1960's or so). Colorful
for a wall in a child's room. An intact but worn child's huipil. Loose
threads and looseness in the lower selvages as well as some spotting.

black background probably of cotton threads.

near the selvages. The back side is actually lighter than the front -
its my hunch that the weaver was very proud of this huipil and wore it
reversed most of the time to protect it from sun and wear.

This is an older skirt with some wear along one salvage - in
otherwise good condition. I believe it is primarily cotton, but may
have some other threads. Skirt length 28.5 " by 58 " inches wide (fabric
length 108"). A 3" panel of newer Chichi fabric has been added
to the top of the skirt to lengthen it (this fabric is not included
in the described dimensions of the original skirt).

(finger tip sized) that I didn't notice when I bought, otherwise generally
good
used condition. Tube skirt is 102" wide. Length is 26".

Fitting
Tips --- Huipils were traditionally made on a loom. Thus they are made of rectangular pieces
and are not intended to be a fitted garment. The width of the garment should be
considerably larger (at least 25 to 33%) than the shoulders of the wearer.
Think about room to grow too! Mayan women often put tucks in a huipil's shoulder
then remove them as a child grows.
Neck and head hole openings
on Huipils are often small. Note that we can not
guarantee that the neck size of a Huipil fits you and your child.
If you want to wear some huipils you may have to open the neck opening and
lightly stitch it. This is especially true of
Huipils that have been woven on a back-strap
loom. Please check your neck and head measurements
carefully!!!
