traditional 3-panel huipil handwoven on backstrap loom with geometric
designs. Traditional sun neck with velvet edge and slit in good shape. ;Even
wear on brocade that overall is in good shape. Base material shows some
spotting and uneven fading, especially on one side panel where differential
fading between lots of thread give a bit of a striped appearance and their
is light spotting. Because of that I'd probably call it in fair
condition rather than good.

Chichicastenango --- Nice geometric
design on this girl's or small woman's 3- panel huipil. All panel ends are
selvage finished, three somewhat loose, 3 tight. I believe the black base
material is probably acrylic and the brocade a variety of thread types.
Nice velvet finishing in excellent condition around the traditional "sun"
neckline. Brocade in very good condition with a few loose threads.
Black base in generally good condition except at very bottom of panel near
selvage where a couple spots of wax or similar material are found (see photo
at left. If I get
them out price may go up a bit). Sides are open so can wear as poncho, or
seam close if you prefer. Hard to find this size in this good used
condition. Would be nice to wear.
Chichicastenango --- Striking
double-headed eagle and geometric designes woven into this three panel used
huipil. Traditional sun neckline has some wear of the velvet edge. The
panel ends are selvage finished, but one of the center panels ends is quite
loose. Brocade has a little even wear, but generally good condition. Overall
condition I'd call fair primarily because there is some wear and uneven
fading and spotting of the black base material (check pictures) especially
near the selvage edges and under the floral rosettes on one of the side
panels.

There is some mostly even sun fading of black which when faded has a
brownish tinge. In one 2" or so strip of the base material, the fading to
brown/black is more pronounced (see picture on left - presumably the weaver
used black thread, that faded differentially).
Selvages on all panels with some looseness along bottom of
several of the selvages. If wanted to
wear - I would hem one side. Traditional
sun design embroidered around head hole with nicely finished slit.

Chichicastenango --- Unusual flowered
neckline on this Chichi huipil was finely embroidered by machine with nice
velvet edging. Bold Peacock and flowers brocaded into the weave. Three
panels are of uneven length and are selvage finished with some looseness in
three of the panels, including one center panel with "hose-like" runs. Could easily be hemmed if you want even lengths.
Sides are open so can wear as poncho, or seam close if you prefer. One of
side panels has black threads that have faded slightly differently and
appear very dark brown rather than black (look at picture - not very
noticeable). An interesting used huipil with great designs and in moderately
good shape -- does have some fading and a few loose threads.

back-strap loom. Three panels are of fairly even length and are selvage
finished with some looseness in three of the panels. Traditional sun

The base material has some underlying red stains, that are definitely
present, but not real noticeable since the base color is black. With that
exception in generally good condition with a few loose
threads.

3-panel huipil. The weaving is fairly tight with all panels selvage
finished. Traditional sun design around neck. Sides are open so can
wear as poncho, or seam close if you prefer. Black based material has light
fading and spotting, but in general good used condition with a few loose
threads.
Chichicastenango --- An interesting
floral design on this newer-style 3-panel huipil that was woven on a
back-strap loom. The randa-like geometric designs are actually part of the
brocaded weaver. Traditional sun design. Panel edges are selvage
finished with some looseness on three of the panels. The black base material
is sun-faded on the reverse side to a rich brown, indicating the owner may
have protected it, by wearing in reverse side out much of the time.
Sides are open so can wear as poncho, or seam close if you prefer. Generally
in good used condition.

its my hunch that the weaver was very proud of this huipil and wore it
reversed most of the time to protect it from sun and wear.

This is an older skirt with some wear along one salvage - in
otherwise good condition. I believe it is primarily cotton, but may
have some other threads. Skirt length 28.5 " by 58 " inches wide (fabric
length 108"). A 3" panel of newer Chichi fabric has been added
to the top of the skirt to lengthen it (this fabric is not included
in the described dimensions of the original skirt).

colorful randa on this lighter weight blue corte with jaspe design for
woman. Foot-loomed, 2-panel tube shaped skirt with had-done randa embroidery on the seam. Skirt
material is probably primarily rayon shows some fading. A few holes
(finger tip sized) that I didn't notice when I bought, otherwise generally
good
used condition. Tube skirt is 102" wide. Length is 26".

Fitting
Tips --- Huipils were traditionally made on a loom. Thus they are made of rectangular pieces
and are not intended to be a fitted garment. The width of the garment should be
considerably larger (at least 25 to 33%) than the shoulders of the wearer.
Think about room to grow too! Mayan women often put tucks in a huipil's shoulder
then remove them as a child grows.
Neck and head hole openings
on Huipils are often small. Note that we can not
guarantee that the neck size of a Huipil fits you and your child.
If you want to wear some huipils you may have to open the neck opening and
lightly stitch it. This is especially true of
Huipils that have been woven on a back-strap
loom. Please check your neck and head measurements
carefully!!!
