There is a continuum of length and width for Santiago Atitlan belts, shawls and other textiles that I haven't quite figured out.  Check out pictures on right. Belts for Men ---  Older men from Santiago Atitlan still wear traditional "traje" which includes a long (65" to 140"), moderately wide (4" to 8") sash belt wraps multiple times around their pants to hold them up.  I believe the sash also helps a bit when carrying heavy loads.  Boys and younger men also wear the "traje" during more festival occasions.  Belts for Women --- My understanding is that traditionally Mayan women from Santiago Atitlan do not wear belts - they tuck their beautiful red (and now green and grey) skirts in ways that I can't replicate to hold them up.  At times I do see women wearing belts or sashes, but it tends to be ones from another village. Rebozos or Shawls for Girls and Women ---  The rebozo or shawl is very much a part of a girl's or woman's traditional "traje" from Santiago Atitlan.  Older women use the shawl as the ubiquitous "carry cloth" for baby's and other things to and from the market and everyday activities.  I remember reading a story that told that when teenage girls walk together down a street, if a boy was interested in a girl he would try to pull her rebozo.  If the girl let it slip to the ground, it would indicate she might be interested.  If she didn't, she wasn't.  I will try to remember which story book I read this in and add to this page --- I also need to check with my friends from Santiago Atitlan to find out more about the basis of this story when I next visit Guatemala.  Please send me an email if you know more lynn@terraexpience.com
