LA Casa De Luz

LA Case De Luz is a midwifery training program for indigenous rural midwives in the central highlands of Guatemala, Lake Atitlan.  It's principle goal is to make resources and training programs accessible to Mayans where the need is greatest.  San Marcos la Laguna is one such rural pueblo threatened by many dangers including disease, poverty and lack of education.

L a Casa de Luz was formed by a group of concerned foreign women to help improve the lives and educational opportunities for the traditional Indigenous Midwives and the families they attend.

The lack of access to adequately trained health care professions contributes to Guatemala's high rates of infant and maternal mortality.  Guatemala ranks third in maternal and infant mortality in the Western world and First in Central America.  The Mayan Midwives provide maternity care for the majority of indigenous women. The midwives have voiced their need for more skills, continuing education and basic equipment.

This project is a first step in a long-term effort to create a training model and program for midwives that can be used to help reduce infant mortality rates in Guatemala.  With the construction of the midwifery school, clinic and birthing center, as an integrated hand-on, academic program La Casa de Luz is helping to revive good traditional midwifery practices and add the essential Western counter part for the helth of women and their children
