Description:         A classic story that tells the tale of a Mayan boy, Tigre, who grows up quickly when his father is injured.  Tigre takes his father's place clearing and planting the family's small milpa (corn field).  Through the tale the reader learns a great deal about the cultural traditions of a Mayan family and the critical importance of corn and weather in their lives. A important read for older youth interested in the Maya.  I initially  read a library copy of the 1956 story.  I have been unable to find a hard-back version of the book that is in print.  I wish it would be reprinted in hardback.

Age:                    9 -13
