(from the Fair Trade Resource Network - http://www.fairtraderesource.org/ )

On & around May 9th, people across the globe will be coming together to celebrate Fair TradWorld Fair Trade Day 2009e.  In the U.S. we are setting the world record for the World’s Largest Fair Trade Coffee Break, and we need your help to do it!

What is a “Fair Trade Break”?

A Fair Trade Break is simply an opportunity for a community, a workplace, a class, or a group of friends to take time out to consume, showcase, and discuss the benefits of Fair Trade. The focus is on increasing awareness and educating others about the importance of Fair Trade and the producers who make and grow the products that we consume.

Fair Indigo will be donating 100% of our sales to education on Saturday, May 9th, 2009. We believe that one of the best ways to help a community prosper is through education. To support this concept at a local level, we celebrate World Fair Trade Day annually by giving back to area schools. 100% of our sales will be donated; 50% will go directly to your child’s school or a school of your choice, and 50% will go to the Fair Indigo Foundation to support education globally.

How does it work? Shop at Fair Indigo on Saturday, May 9th, 2009. If you spend $20, your school gets $10 and the Foundation gets $10. It’s that simple! (In store and in stock purchases only; donation does not apply to purchase of gift certificates or prior purchases.) Shop our sustainable & fair trade clothes for your whole family! Selling Fair Trade Coffee Every Day

There are a fair number of other coffee shops and restaurants in Madison that sell primarily or 100% Fair Trade Coffee and Tea.  To our knowledge they didn't sign up to participate in World Fair Trade Day - probably because they are too busy serving their customers Fair Trade products each and every day.  There is not a really good up-to-date list of them (I'd like for someone to create one especially of shops that are 100% fair trade --- any volunteers?) - but good places to start to find these shops is http://www.fairtrademadison.org/shop.html and the Just Coffee Web site:  http://justcoffee.coop .
